Cedarburg Foundation

Ben Levy: President 2010-2012

Ben Levy

The Cedarburg Foundation is pleased to announce that Ben Levy was sworn in as its new President for a two-year term beginning at the June 2010 board meeting.

A lifelong Cedarburg resident, Levy graduated from Arizona State University in 1985 and received his law degree from Marquette University Law School in 1988. He currently specializes in civil litigation as a member of the Levy & Levy law firm in Cedarburg and is past president of the Ozaukee County Bar Association.

As an avid civic volunteer, Levy has served as president of several associations in the area, including the Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce and Forward Cedarburg, Cedarburg’s former Economic Development Board. He is a volunteer teacher in the Junior Achievement program and coaches youth basketball in Cedarburg. In addition, Levy was a board member of the Cedarburg Community Pool Association and was involved in the fund raising efforts for the Ozaukee County YMCA facility in Saukville.  He is currently a member of the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary Club and serves on the Community Scholarship Endowment Board.

As an active member of the board for the Cedarburg Foundation, Levy was chairman of the Development Committee and was instrumental in growing the Foundation's Legacy Society from 13 members in 2006 to more than 75 members today. "When Don left us I was asked to help grow the Legacy Society and I was honored to try and carry on his work," said Levy, referring to the untimely death of Don Rintleman who was about to become President of the Foundation in 2006 when he was killed in a car accident. "Don wanted to have 100 members in the Legacy Society and we have been working hard to make that a reality."

With the Foundation's endowment poised to reach $1 million this spring, Levy said his goal is to grow the endowment to $1.25 million which allows the foundation to work with local foundations who wish to affiliate with the GCF. "We do so many things for the community, but we can always do more," he said. "The larger our endowment grows, the more we can do to continue to make the Cedarburg area a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family."

Bob Chmielewski, current President of the Foundation, said Levy has a solid reputation in the community as someone who is dedicated to making things happen. "I have worked with Ben for several years now and I am blown away by the amount of things he gets done for the Foundation," he said. "I am so excited to have him follow me in this position because I know that with his dynamic personality he will get things done."

Levy and his wife Janice have three children and live in Cedarburg.  "Cedarburg is a very special place," he said. "Having the opportunity to make it even better is a challenge that I am excited about."

Also at the June board meeting, James Schowalter, vice president of Port Washington State Bank will be sworn in as a new board member. Current board members who are beginning their second term of service include Ralph Huiras, Carole Blaney, Shirley Krenzke, and Mary Kay Bourbulas.

The Cedarburg Foundation was formally organized on September 29, 2000 to provide support for artistic, cultural, and community service projects that contributed to Cedarburg’s civil vitality.

Bob Chmielewski: Immediate Past President

Jim CouttsBob Chmielewski steps down from his 2-year term as president of the Cedarburg Foundation at the June 2010 Board meeting. A Cedarburg resident since 1969, Chmielewski has been heavily involved in community activities dating back several decades, most notably his active role in the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary club.

As part of his goals as leader of the Foundation, Chmielewski said he would like to see more growth in the endowment fund as well as more “friend-raising” to achieve that goal. “We want to sustain and enhance our wonderful quality of life in Cedarburg,” he said. “If we do a good job of friend-raising, our endowment will grow.” And so it has. During his tenure, Chmielewski has seen the endowment grow to over $1 Million, membership in the Legacy Society grow from 20 to over 74, and many projects funded in whole or in part by the Foundation, all evidence of the Foundation's steady progress under his leadership.

Today there are more than 74 members of the Legacy Society Honoring the memory of Donald Rintelman, a significant increase in only 2 years. Visit the Legacy Society page for further information.
