Cedarburg Foundation

How to Create Your
Personal Legacy to Cedarburg

A wide variety of ways to share are available to meet virtually any situation including:

Outright Gifts - Gifts of cash, securities, property or real estate are simple, convenient ways to donate and receive maximum tax advantages.

Bequests - Cash or property given through a will is usually fully deductible for federal estate and state inheritance tax purposes. The Community Foundation can also be named as the residuary beneficiary of your estate or be named in a charitable remainder trust created by the will.

Life Insurance - By naming the Foundation as the irrevocable beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you are entitled to an immediate tax deduction in the amount of the cash value of the policy. Insurance premiums paid thereafter are deductible as charitable gifts.

City Hall

Charitable Lead Trusts - You can name the Foundation as beneficiary of income from a trust for a specific number of years. Ultimately, the corpus, or remaining assets of the trust, goes to other named beneficiaries, such as children or grandchildren.

Charitable Remainder Trusts - You can provide lifetime income for yourself or other beneficiaries and leave the remainder of the estate to the Community Foundation.

Those donating outright gifts having a value of $10,000 and those naming the Greater Cedarburg Community Foundation as a beneficiary in their wills, a beneficiary of a charitable lead trust or a charitable remainder trust or the irrevocable beneficiary of a life insurance policy automatically become members of the Cedarburg Foundation's Legacy Society and are listed as such in the Foundation's publications.

Benefits to Foundation Donors

For donors seeking to make large gifts, the Greater Cedarburg Community Foundation can serve both as an operating charity and a private foundation. The Foundation is able to offer the simplicity and tax advantages of a public charity combined with the personal recognition, donor involvement, and flexibility of a private foundation.

Key features of the Greater Cedarburg Community Foundation are:

Recognition or Anonymity as you wish - An endowment created in the donor's name becomes a permanent legacy that will be remembered for generations. However, if the donor wishes to remain anonymous, the Foundation will carefully protect the donor's identity.

Permanence - Donors can create permanent endowment funds in their name to benefit the community for purposes they specify.

Simplicity - Donors can achieve the satisfaction of creating their personal philanthropic fund while avoiding the complexity of forming and operating a private foundation.

Tax advantages - As a public charity, a community foundation offers the highest level of tax benefit for charitable giving.

Cost effectiveness - As a result of its affiliation with the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, the Greater Cedarburg Community Foundation can pool investment and administration and provide full services to each fund at a fraction of the cost of administering each separately.

Responsible stewardship - The Foundation is managed by an active Board of Directors of local community leaders. They oversee its administration and grant-making, and are directly responsible to donors and the community.
