The Cedarburg Community Foundation and two local businesses contributed funds to allow a new engineering club at Cedarburg High School to compete in its first regional robotics competition Feb. 23rd. The foundation, along with Carlson Tool & Manufacturing Inc. of Cedarburg and Rostad Aluminum Corp. of Grafton donated a total of $900 to allow two teams of CHS students to compete in “Tech Challenge” sponsored by USFirst Robotics in Appleton this weekend. The group previously received about $1,500 in grants from Rockwell Automation and GE Healthcare in addition to private donations.

The engineering club at the school “is just starting up, so it’s not like we can raise money because we’re busy making robots,” said David Tice, technology teacher at CHS and advisor of the club. “We went to the foundation hoping to get the money from one source, but local businesses were very receptive to helping us as well.”

The challenge, which is called “Quad Quandry”, requires the teams to construct a robot using only pieces from a specific kit. The robot must be able to complete the task of picking up rings and placing them at strategic locations as it moves around a field that is 12 square feet in size.

“We are delighted to support this effort by students from our community,” said Vicki Capadona, chair of the grant committee for the Cedarburg Community Foundation. “It’s efforts like this that enhance our community’s image while giving local teens a chance to compete in a national competition.”  This is the first competition for the engineering club, which was established last September and has since grown to 25 members.
